Out to Eat with Anxiety

DSC03264If you have Anxiety Disorder or other related condition going to crowded places is the last thing you want to do. Even if you agree to it while at home, once you get there you are likely to say “damn, now why did I do that?”. But, you really can get through it and I want to give you some tips to do battle with dinner time.

First things first, you really don’t have to fight it. And really the only way that you will get through dinner at a busy eatery is to accept that you don’t feel good. In addition, you have to accept, fully, whatever your mind and body are doing to you. Why you ask? Because by now you have probably had a million or so panic attacks, disturbing/racing thoughts, palpitations , etc and after all that your still here. My point is that although panic and anxiety are difficult to deal with it will not physically harm you. Your fear control or fight or flight instinct is on stuck position, and although alarm bells are ringing there is no fire. So, you can sit there and be safe, even if you don’t think so.

Now before you go out figure out why you are going. Is it for a friends birthday or a co-workers promotion? Figure this out first so you know how much time to spend at the dinner table/function. If you know your going to have a hard time, having a time limit will help – a goal. So its your buddies b-day, set your mind for 1-1/2 hrs of dinner time. With this expectation you know your inner turmoil will not last longer than this.

Next, if you know you are not doing so well, let everyone know up front that your feeling a little under the weather. This can be used as a great escape if needed without making you appear rude or uncaring. Now I know lying is never cool, but let’s be realistic, when you are having a fit of anxiety all you want is out. This is just another way. But, remember its important to try your best to hash it out. You have to practice relaxing when your not relaxed – not just in bed.

Lastly, if possible bring your significant other or close friend. This will give you a go to person. So when you start feeling a little bad or you feel an episode starting, you can turn to them (even just visually) for comfort. If things really get out of control excuse yourself to the restroom and wash your face with some cold water and take deep breathes. For you ladies, if you are wearing makeup wet a paper towel and just dab a little. Remember, deep breaths and practice positive self talk.

Although I struggle with anxiety even now, I can go to any restaurant and get through it because of all the practice I have gotten. Don’t back down from your fears, you have to face them. It is hard but well worth it.
