One Response to “What is PTSD?”

I’d suspected I had PTSD for years due to watching and to a lesser degree enduring my alcoholic father’s abuse of family members, but it wasn’t until I got treated for Adult Attention Deficit Disorder that — surprise! — I finally had the focus and organization to notice and to object to abuse in my workplace. Well, again surprise: I’m out on FMLA, they think I’m crazy, they sent me off to an independent medical examiner (which is a little like calling Josef Mengele an independent medical investigator) … it’s not a picnic. I am 56 years old, working on a master’s degree, and had worked at this place for 10 years with nothing but glowing evaluations. Oh, and murmurings that I was “too sensitive.”

I’m kind of lost now, angry and upset and attempted suicide last week. It’s been fun. I have been sober for 24 years and am here to tell you that there’s no magic cure; life goes on, people develop new talents and new illnesses and new strengths. I think the sooner we get away from magical thinking the better we’ll be. Happy, joyous, and free ,,,, yeah, maybe. But don’t bet the farm on it.
