photo credit: basibanget Most people seek reassurance at some point or another.  The vast majority of all people did this kind of thing on a regular basis as children.  And when you have an anxiety disorder it's almost like we are kids again in the sense that the desire to seek reassurance can be almost automatic. But why is this the case? Well, the primary and most obvious reason is because anxiety disorder(s) create a tremendous amount of uncertainty.  When we have a spike in anxious feelings or thoughts we become afraid, worried, and

My 10th Anxiety Anniversary

In August of 1999 I had my first panic attack.  Since that time I've had a life filled with anxiety, worry, fear, and general apprehension.  The fact that I have anxiety is not really surprising when you think about it.  My great grandmother, grandmother and mother all had or have the condition. In my case it was mostly genetics that brought this on, but whatever the cause it all sucks nonetheless.  In retrospect despite my long struggle with anxiety I've still lead a relatively normal life.  Sure I've missed some parties, don't drink, or

Anxiety And The Gym

As long as this blog has existed I have always encouraged my readers to exercise because whether it's running, biking, swimming, or whatever it's a well known fact that exercise can relieve stress and anxiety.  I've worked out myself off and on for some time but always in my home.  I've always been too self conscious to run down the street or worst yet join a gym. It's not like I've never been a gym member, just not for a long time.  Recently I rejoined a local gym and the adjustment has been steep.  This is because for anxiety sufferers

Many anxiety sufferers really do suffer because of a potential chemical imbalance, heredity, excessive stress, substance abuse, or other mental ailments.  However, there is a group of people that have an anxiety disorder caused by an actual medical condition.  In some people there really is a phyiscal basis for their anxious suffering and this is why regular medical screenings are important. Now statistically it is very difficult to say what number of anxiety sufferers have anxiety because of a pre-existing medical condition.  But the fact

What To Do With Your Anxious Morning Thought(s)

You ever sit up in bed from a restful sleep and then immediately start scanning your brain for anxiety and sources of worry?  I have and I've done so plenty of times.  I seriously doubt that this is intentional on our part, it's more of a habit you see.  A habit which can unfortunately throw a wrench into our entire day. They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and along those same lines I'd say that just as important is your first thought (or more likely series of thoughts) of the day.  To have a set of positive first

The Habit Of Fear

After 10 years of not being able to rid myself of anxiety I've learned a lot.  And perhaps one of the most significant lessons I've learned about anxiety is that much of my own anxiety is self inflicted and habitual.  It sucks to say but it seems to me that at times I'm my own worst enemy. The fact that fear can even be habitual is not surprising when you think about it.  I think the same can be said of any thought or feeling that evokes an intense emotional reaction.  For example, if someone tells themselves that they are fat, well

Recently I ranted on the Anxietyguru.net forum about my current anxiety episode.  For the past 10 days I've been in the midst of a terrible anxiety ordeal. In the past I've spoken about the two types of anxiety, the physical and mentally based kind.  Well my current state of anxiety is fully mental and sadly rather debilitating. But this post is not really about that.  What I actually wanted to say is that as a result of being in so much mental distress I've been searching for information to reinforce all I know about anxiety to help me
