It turns out that the economic downturn is not just causing angst in the United States. According to news.scotsman.com there is a higher number of Scots in Glasgow seeking help for anxiety, stress and depression as a result of recent global economic turbulence. This is of course no surprise since the world economy is being hit negatively from all sides. The housing market crash, rising energy cost, inflation, the credit crunch, and now even banks are starting to fail (in the USA). With all these economic problems anxiety in the 'general'

As you struggle with your anxiety disorder it is normal to assume that it will only get worse. However I want to tell you today that anxiety disorders and all it's nasty symptoms can have only a limited effect on your body and mind. Sometimes you might get caught up in your daily episodes of anxious thought and feeling and really believe that something even worse then what you already have will develop. When in fact the the truth is that if you have experienced anxiety for any amount of time it is likely that you have already seen it all.

Just Say No To Anxiety Drugs

Today I wanted to talk about anti-anxiety drugs and whether or not we should be taking them. Let me just start by saying that although the title of today's post is "just say no" maybe a better way of understanding my viewpoint on this issue is "just say no - most of the time". There is a great debate out in the world about whether or not people should be taking drugs to correct any health issue. There are many proponents of holistic healing and natural remedies who feel that drugs are not the answer to illness. On the

Show Notes With anxiety disorders comes a loss of confidence. It is difficult for you to make decisions sometimes since you think one decision sounds great one minute and the very next second your on to something else totally different. You may think that because you have lost most or all of your confidence that you are a coward or defective. This of course is not the case at all. This may also lead to you challenging yourself to a test of "strength" and will. You go and do things that you may not be ready for - but when you do

Anxiety and Your Amygdala

I recently posted an entry about a new study taking place at Rutgers University. The post describes how researchers have found the small cluster of cells inside the brains amygdala that directly controls fear and anxiety. As a result of writing about that I wanted to evaluate the amygdala itself. When you have a first response of fear and anxiety it is instantaneous. You go from normal to very afraid in what seems like nanoseconds. What is going on in the brain when this happens? What fires the emotional trigger that sets you on a course

How To Reconnect With Loved Ones

Today I wanted to touch on a subject that I have struggled with for years. That issue is the connection, or lack thereof, with the people we love. This problem is not just between you and your significant other, but also between you and your sibling, parent(s), friends or even your dog. As I have mentioned many times in the past our anxiety disorders tend to make us selfish worrymites that  only think about our disturbing thoughts or symptoms and how they are affecting us. During this worry time we exclude others from our lives and seem

Having an anxiety disorder is a bummer and there is simply no way around it. With all the headaches, dizziness, lumps in the throat, panic attacks, urgency, etc you tend to get caught up in your problems and forget to smile much less laugh. But don't overlook the power of a good laugh. It has been well documented that laughing is a great way to reduce stress and help gain perspective on your problems so do it as much as humanly possible. If you let it, anxiety can have you all wrapped up in yourself and your dreaded thoughts and symptoms. It

According to Celebrity Fix and Star magazine Angelina Jolie has been hyperventilating and having panic attacks. A source close to Jolie has revealed that she is scared about the birth of her twins. Jolie is apparently concerned that her new babies will not mesh well with the other kids and she is also concerned about the prospect of breast feeding two hungry babies. The "source" also stated that Jolie's voice is shrilled when she begins to panic and needs to be consoled by those close to her. Could there be more to this story? I'd say yea

The Anxiety Guru Show: Morning Nerves Ep 5

Show Notes For many people with anxiety disorder the morning can be a difficult time because it can feel like the start of another difficult day. This can be disheartening because you may have gone to bed the night before and thought that the next day was going to be better. At times you may wake up feeling nervous/anxious, sad, still have physical symptoms as if you never went to sleep. Why do you feel this way? Exactly why is unknown as I haven't been able to find any convincing answers, however, I will say because your anxiety
