Not Thinking Too Hard Is Good

Thinking is something we all do all the time. There is no way to stop the incessant chatter that is the soundtrack to everything we do. Should I eat this? Or should I eat that? I need to go to the bathroom but I'll wait a few minutes until I go. After that I better check my voice mail and then my email oh and I have to... it never stops. Thinking then is not an issue but thinking too hard is or at least can be an issue. Having anxiety is like thinking in that it is always there in one form or another. Anxiety though has the ability to

Will Your Anxiety Ever Get Better?

Paul Dooley

Will your anxiety ever get better? This is the million dollar question for many folks that struggle with anxiety. The answer to this question is yes but there is a caveat. The reason I say yes is because in my own experience I have been through terrible periods of intense anxiety and fear only to come out "normal" for a time. The caveat lies in our inability or more likely unwillingness to face our fears and challenge them squarely. How soon and to what degree you improve will depend on many factors. Primarily your attitude toward anxiety

The Anxiety Before The Anxiety Disorder

For many of us our anxiety disorders feel like they sprang up out of the blue as it were. But were there any signs that one was developing a long lasting and sometimes torturous sense of apprehension and negative physical feeling? Or was it always there and we now simply see things different? Although children can have anxiety disorders it seems that adults are the ones that exhibit physical and mental exacerbation with the condition. Do kids have a better handle on this or is it a case of ignorance being bliss? Looking back on my own

There are a lot of bad things associated with having an anxiety disorder but luckily for us one of them is not feeling panicked 24 hours a day. Don't get me wrong, there are times when you can feel continuous anxiety for a day, weeks or even months but by and large you do get something of a break from time to time. But what happens when the opposite is true and you've been feeling good for several weeks only to find that your anxiety is still there? These are the times when you have to learn how to stave off pessimism and the return of the

Find Out Why Having A Pet Can Help Your Anxiety

One of the things I always tout on this blog is making sure that people use multiple means of coping with their anxiety. This is by far the best way of ensuring that your anxiety disorder can be managed effectively. Normally people think of shrinks, drugs, or herbs as good remedies for an anxiety disorder and in fact these all have their merits. But there are other lesser talked about forms of therapy that are just as good. It is widely accepted that pets have a way of calming people - even to the point of lowering blood pressure. There have

Many of us have heard of various types of breathing techniques meant to calm the nerves but just as many of us never actually try them. Some people feel strange doing breathing techniques that have strange sounding names and seem rather complicated. However although you may be reluctant you should at least consider using breathing to reduce your stress and anxiety. Learning how to breathe to reduce anxiety is a useful way of helping us when we get nervous or have a full blown panic attack. This is not just because breathing deeply and slowly

Many of us spend days, weeks, or even years looking for a person that will point us in the right direction. A person that will not only explain our anxiety disorder in clear terms, but also how we can cope with it without going broke. There are so many great ways to cope with anxiety, but unfortunately many of them require a lot of moolah. Dr. Weekes on the other hand, provides inexpensive resources that can actually make you feel better. Now, Dr. Claire Weekes ( 1903 - 1990) is not a caped crusader. She was a medical doctor and

If you have had an anxiety disorder for more than a few months then chances are that you have looked for a cure for your anxiety disorder. You may have went to Google or some other search engine and actually typed in the search box "cure for anxiety" or something like that. Or maybe you went to a library and did some searching there. And although I don't know how you searched, it is likely that you didn't find exactly what you were looking for. As with any mental or medical condition, when people become afflicted with something

Is Mental Illness Real?

Paul Dooley

I just read an article in the American Chronicle that gives a scathing criticism of psychology and psychiatry and describes this profession as a "significantly inventive profession". The articles author Lourdes Salvador goes on to essentially bash the entire psychiatric profession and explains that people with mental illness are labeled incorrectly as abnormal and basically drugged up for being different. She argues that people are labeled mentally ill by psychologist and psychiatrist simply because their patients do not behave and or
