Wearing A Mask Of Tranquility

Paul Dooley

photo credit: giopuo Most anxiety sufferers don't go around shaking and biting their nails, however that doesn't mean that most of us don't spend a good amount of energy on perfecting and using what I like to call a mask of tranquility. Outwardly I think we would all like to be seen as confident, steady people that project all the attractive personality traits most people admire.  But when you find yourself nervous a good deal of the time these traits don't come easily and have to be worked on. Wearing a mask of tranquility is what all

Being labeled anything with a negative connotation doesn't feel good.  However, for better or for worse labels help us to identify things more readily. When it comes to anxiety disorders we are usually labeled as sufferers of panic disorder, OCD, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, PTSD, agoraphobia, and other types of phobics.  But ironically I think the psychologist of the past got it right in one word - Neurosis. What exactly is neurosis?  Well I can try to give you some quasi accurate interpretation but let's lean on

During the course of your internet and bookstore searches for anxiety relief one of the most common tips you've seen is "stay positive".  And although we all have some notion of what this means sometimes you have to focus your positivity in order for it to make a difference. There are a lot of things that you can do to foster positivity in your life, however I've decided to shine a light on 4 negative habits that should be avoided because of their capacity to feed your stress and anxiety. Today I want to introduce a new contributor to Anxietyguru.net.   Den is an Anxiety Guru reader and has lived with anxiety disorder for several years and has decided to offer his personal experiences and knowledge to help others with their daily struggle with anxiety. According to some recent studies scientist have shown human babies may be born with an ability to discern musical rhythms, possess a rudimentary understanding of math and language, and are equipped with some knowledge of the physical world.  While these studies may be

On today's podcast I spoke with an Anxietyguru.net reader named Peter. Peter is from Sudbury, Massachusetts and has lived with bipolar disorder and anxiety for the better part of his life. I think this episode is particularly interesting given that Peter has taken medication for his condition for the past thirty plus years. There is something to be said about experience, and Peter has a great deal of insights to provide as a result. The interview was mainly based on Peter's own experience but we also delved into a general discussion about

The Time I Became Too Relaxed

Relax, relax, that's what people are probably always telling you to do. And more to the point I'm sure that's what you wish you could do on demand, but anxiety has a way of cramping this aspiration. But do you really want instant relaxation? A boneless body on tap? There was this one time that I became way too relaxed and I want to talk to you about it. Like you and many others I sometimes would lose sleep because of my anxiety and as a result would lie awake on my couch late at night. Well about 5 years ago I had one of these late night

Dying A Thousand Deaths

To be honest with you I feel like I'm going to die suddenly sometimes. I'm not ashamed of this fact, it's just the way it is. Interestingly, I have developed a rather deep sense of acceptance when it comes to feeling fear and anxiety symptoms. I accept the feelings and thoughts without much commotion, but I still think that instant death is likely at least every other Thursday or so. That's the amazing thing about anxiety that I still have trouble understanding. It's particularly hard to understand because I have a rather clear notion

How To Desensitize Yourself

Paul Dooley

Let's face it, no matter how many pills we pop or tricks we try we will still be anxious from time to time. However practicing the art of desensitization can ensure that we can relax our attitude toward fear and handle anxiety symptoms just a little bit better than we do now. First lets define what it means to be sensitized. When a person becomes sensitized they have essentially conditioned their body and mind to react to certain physical and psychological stimuli with extreme hypersensitivity. For example, say you have built up an
